New Orleans – the Lower Ninth Ward.

Early today, we took a drive through the Lower Ninth Ward.  As we rolled down St. Claude Ave, it resembled the run-down areas of Detroit, but with some serious rebuilding effort.  Then we turned North, toward Lake Pontchartrain, and everything changed.  It was a wilderness.  Overgrown bushes and grasses filled expansive vacant lots.  The bush was over 5 feet tall in places.  It was urban rural.  The road dropped out completely in places.  There were no more houses.  There was a destroyed car sitting in a field, embraced by the grass.  A house with “DO NOT BULLDOZE” spray painted to its side.  That is someone’s home.  I did not take a picture because I didn’t need one.  I will never forget it.
